I agree. The "D" has its own sub-receiver that can
be attached to a separate antenna and afford true
diversity receive, and the sub receiver is tunable
everywhere without relation to the Main receiver.
I use one dipole going N/S and another going E/W
and the AF jack goes to an audio amp and then to
a center-channel HiFi speaker with two drivers, so
the end result is very interesting.
In my hotel room MP I can only use one antenna
at a time on the radio, because the Sub receiver
can't be separated from the Rx line.
Additionally, the RF Power knob on the "D" is
right out in front near the Mic Gain and Drive
controls, while the "MP" RF Power is a thin knob
right next to the microphone connector and
not very convenient.
Lastly, the display panel in the "MP" is dimmer
than the "D."
There were no more "D's," so the only thing left to get
for the expedition was an MP, and after 6 months I still don't
know the best menu settings.
