For folks who couldn't get their USB-serial adapters to work, take a  
look at this posting over at the Elecraft reflector:

This could explain why some of us have no problem at all while others  
couldn't get the same adapter to work -- ground potential and noise  
between the computer and radio.  This could also explain why  
interfaces like the ones from microHAM always worked -- they are  
optoisolated.
