My 1000MP (1999) had the same problem.  The length of time got longer and
longer. I finally got concerned that it was going to quit at an inopportune
moment and I sent it in for replacement. The replaced two or three things
and it works perfectly again. (Except for the RIT that jumps around.)

As usual the expense is as much for the shipping as the fixing.
