The wording in my MP manual (100W radio) does mention what you have stated
below. It also says that thought the cooling system is designed for
continuous duty transmission at 100 watts they recommend running it at 50
watts to avoid the possibility of overheating it.
In commercial gear....100% duty cycle means just that.
I haven't run RTTY in contest yet but would expect to run the radio at
reduced power probably starting at 50W without worrying about heating it up
too much. I think what was meant in the 3 minutes on 3 minutes off was at
full power. That's 50% duty cycle by commercial standards....
My FT-1000D (200w radio) manual states 100watts continuous duty. If more
power is needed for RTTY it can be run at 200W with 3 minutes or less key
down and at least 3 minutes of receive to allow cooling. (that's a more
honest way of stating it true duty cycle) So I would expect to be able to
run the "D" at 100w with no issues....so it looks like a 50% rule on the
power out is a safe place to start.
If you are wanting to know what power level people are calling QRP while
running a 100 to 200 watt rig that's another question all together....
My definition would probably be 5 watts or less to qualify as
QRP.....certainly not 100.
Cecil...
