noel,
i was sure this had come up before so I went through the list archive
but only found some postings from you asking the same question before
and not getting any help. Apparently this is a mystery problem. I
can only suggest a new battery--maybe cleaning the contacts in the rig
that connect to it, or a larger source of current like a pack of
batteries. it's an ugly fix I know, but loosing everything in storage
is pretty irritating also. It kind of seems like one of those
situations where something has to get worse before you can figure out
what's wrong and fix it. The contact cleaning is suggested because I
had an experience once where a battery's contacts oxidized over time
because the metal was different (copper) from what the battery ends
were. The battery was fine--the contacts just needed cleaning and all
was okay. if it's not that and the battery is in fact dead then there
is obviously some low R path draining it off perhaps though a component
that is doing its job but has a low resistance short from + to ground.
you might take a look at the schematic around the battery for possible
culprits.

by the way, it would be really nice if the archive had a search engine
associated with it so that a keyword search of the archive is possible.
I even tried using google but that did not work--apparently the google
robot is prevented from crawling the archive and indexing the posts,
which is too bad as the usefulness of the archive is extremely limited
with no keyword searching.
