Adam,

Of course it is the radio ... and it is the lack of narrow filtering
in the front end that is its biggest downfall.  However, when it comes
to DSP one can be aggressive or moderate in the settings.  I probably
should have framed it in those terms (trying to get create excessively
steep sided filters, excessive noise reduction, etc.).

I am waiting for the day that DSP and the analog rf/if amplifier
chains that feed it can provide 170 dB spurious free dynamic range.
That much is needed to handle the peak to average levels of a wide
"window" in an urban environment.
