[1000mp] Loss of Sidetone

I generally tune my Mark V Field using CW with reduced output. An odd thing
happens intermittently, and I can't figure out why. By intermittently I mean
it will happen consistently for several tune-ups over one or more days, and
then disappear for no apparent reason.

What happens, is that when I key down and hold the key down, the side tone
fades out over two or three seconds and then disappears altogether.
Meanwhile, the power meters indicate that carrier power is still going down
the line, without reduction.

When this problem disappears, the cw sidetone will stay on continuously as
long as I am keyed down, no problem, and remain that way for several
operations, days, or weeks. Then back to fading out for an equally
relatively long period. And so on. 

The problem does not appear to have anything to do with a high SWR, as it
will happen when there is a perfect match. I'm guessing it has something to
do with menu settings, but for the life of me I can't figure out what.
