[1000mp] FT-1000 with Heil PR-40

There are many radio's that use the die cast chassis design. JRC has done
so in the past and many military radio sets are built that way. The Icom is
very well built it's just too bad about the tiny little tooth pick knobs at
the bottom....and I prefer two separate VFO knobs instead of having to
toggle between which frequency display you are currently adjusting... Alot
of nice stuff in a small, tough, package though... Hope the display holds up
though...runs way too hot!
To defend the Icom main tuning knob...it's better than most. (it's also has
an adjustable clutch to set the freewheeling) Played with the old Drake
stuff of years gone by? There is no question the tuning knob on the
FT-1000D is the finest feeling tuning knob since the Hammarlund SP-600 and
not likely to be duplicated in any of the new rigs but on the flip side the
fine feeling knob of the FT-1000D is coupled to a tuning system that is a
bit fast by most tastes. I am in the process of installing the modification
kit that slows that down on both the main and secondary VFO. The MP series
has a cheaper knob design and feel but it's not too bad...I miss the finger
indentation to spin the thing but it does have the concentric jog system for
speedy tuning....and you can set the tuning rate!
Fair enough trade off!
Cecil...
