A "ground" (especially though a relay) is not "perfect"  - one 
needs to deal with the leakage.
 
I had a series attenuator resistor blow in the MP when using 
a Beverage (which was admittedly too close to a TX antenna). 
No such problem with an (additional) external relay
 
I'd err on the side of extra protection if you have any doubts.
