For better or worse, the EIA RS232 standard has been treated cavalierly by
manufacturers almost since inception, in both voltage levels and data rate.

Thank you, Ross! It works fine with my desk machine, a older Dell with a
standard DB9 serial port. You know, I checked for the presence of signal
output out of the USB/Serial Port convertor on the laptop, but I didn't
think to check for signal level - after all, it is covered by the RS232
standard...
Assumption is the mother.... !!!
Anyway, thanks to all, now I know it is not my lovely Mark V...!
