Reading the manuals and understanding polarity is all what it takes. It might also involve using Ohm's law which - as far as I know - is part of license requirements in USA. 

A benefit it gives you, that you can have full barefoot power when you have your amp switched off or on stand-by and optimal drive when you have it enabled. Proper tuning is just the cherry on the cake. 

IMHO someone who asks advice and help for learning should be encouraged and not discouraged.
