Hi John-
You probably got your answer already but I just dug up some old notes and it says clearly to operate in the "flat" position on low bands and "tuned" on the high bands via the 8-4 menu, high referring to 10 meters and perhaps 15, but it's best to see which preference you like up there.

Just got my FT1000MP in yesterday, and wow! what a radio! Still figuring out all the things it can do. What preamp setting do most people prefer? I have it set right now to the tuned setting, which seems to actually have a negative gain on the low bands to keep the front end from being overloaded (at least the MDS in the QST review seemed to indicate this), and then has a decent gain on the higher bands. Is the flat preamp better to use?
