[1000mp] inrad 1.8 filter experience

Hello Yaesu Fans:
I removed the 1.8 khz third IF filter, after about 2 years, after
experimenting with various Inrad combinations. The 1.8 khz pair, provides
the best QRM reduction, but the fatigue of listening was too high for
everyday DXing. I achieved the more comfortable sound of the 2.4 khz pair,
by using the 8 pole Collins 2.0 khz filter in the third IF. If you use a
slight counterclockwise rotation of the shift control with this combination,
you may not even realize that you have the narrow pair engaged, as the
quality is that good. I think your ear must get trained to listening to the
mechanical filter sound, as your 2.4 third IF is also a ten pole Collins in
the Mark V.
The use of the DSP filters in the second IF, adds quite sharp skirts to the
analog filters, and can be superimposed over the various filter
combinations. When the band is quiet, and the QRM low, I especially like
the use of no filter in the second IF, and the 6 khz ceramic filter in the
third. For additional selectivity, you then engaged the DSP into the second
IF. These combinations give the lowest noise floor possible.
All the above I use with the Inrad roofing filter. You will generally find
that reducing the IF gain in menu 9-1 by two numbers from the factory
setting, will give excellent results, and further reduce the noise floor and
improve the MDS level. Please don't forget to use the RF gain control at
all times, reducing the average setting to about 2 o'clock, for the lowest
noise floor, and highest audio quality.
I have found the above set up to work extremely well, and to provide the
best QRM reduction when necessary, without fatigue. Even working pileups
for hours is not as tiring as it once was.
Regards,
Mike
