They do occupy the same space, you can have only one or the other, but the
roofing filter does what IF amplifier did as well as improving the large
signal handling of the radio. It is at the cost of good AM reception on the
main receiver and no FM on 10 meters as the roofing filter is too narrow for
good sounding AM and FM.
