A friend of mine bought a new mark v a couple of years ago.
It had some problem with the cat control and after some emails to yaesu,
they change the rig with a new one.
The new rig was absolutely ok until someday after 1 year he sold it.
After 2-3 months and several tries with other rigs he decided to buy a mark
v again.
You guess it?
Yaesu sold to him the first one with the cat problem for second time.
The new-old mark v had the same serial number (my firend had all the serials
in his file) but a new date in the 9.8 menu.
so the only safe seems to be the serial number.
see http://www.va3cr.net/main/Menu%20Settings%20by%20VK4EJ.html
According to this
"Menu's 9-8 Factory date of production; this can be changed manually! The
serial number of your MP contains some information of the production date
too. For example 0G350136 means 0 = the year 2000, G = the 7th month of the
year (July), 50136 the actual serial number, while menu 9-8 shows 01021603!
Both this information is very practical when you buy a second hand MP. I am
not sure, but I think that 9-8 shows the production date of the software
while the serial number shows the production date of the hardware"
If you need more info about menu 9.8
the first six numbers is a date like this YYMMDD.
In above example (01021603) is 16 February of 2001....
The happy end of the story is that Yaesu change the rig again....

Subject: [1000mp] decyphering dates of Yaesu equipment
I've been hoping that someone would write/make available a little applet or
program that
we could enter the model, serial number, menu date code and it would display
the date of
manufacturer.
Wish I could, but anybody out there able to make one?
