noel, tell us a little bit about the band you are on and the proximity of your antenna to your shack. do you notice anything else such as a different sound on your tx audio when driving the amp on the antenna compared to what you hear when you are on a dummy load (you have to have another rx for this unfortunately). I have learned over the past few years that if you drive an amp to a nearby antenna, you can get into weird things if the exciter is not sufficiently isolated from the near field RF, such as big ALC indication, weird swr readings, tx audio distortion, which will all vary from band to band. the mk V ssb tx swr, if the real swr into the amp is low (we'll say 1.2:1 for example) should read that, with "ghosting" images jumping up and down when you talk which you can ignore (that's what mind does anyway). But if you go Ahhhhhhhh into the mic to generate a fairly continuous level of sound the swr meter should settle down and give the real swr. you can also try putting it on cw, keying it and seeing what you get. put a swr bridge or fwd/reflected watt meter in the feed right at the rear panel of the rig and compare it to the f.p. mk v. meter.

also check the amp input swr on different bands. some amps use fixed tuned input circuits for each band that are not totally flat. it's a good idea to key ur amp, put a swr analyzer on the input and sweep each band to see what the real input swr curve to it is. for example, mine is okay on 160 up to around 1950 khz where the swr rises to about 1.7:1 near the top of the band. it's good for me to know that i.e. i know what to expect now should i operate up there, in which case i'll use the rig's built-in tuner.

Subject: [1000mp] field swr meter accurate???/

Hello
I am just trying a new MARK V field here, and I noticed that the swr between the amplifier and the mark v is high....compare with another known swr meter (birds) .
Did somebody notice the same thing with the MARK V field swr meter....
Is it accurate ....
Is there a way to adjust this meter if it is not precise compare with a well calibrated swr meter????
I was using a Kenwood before this MARK V Filed, and the swr between the radio and the amp, was not that high....
Thanks
NOEL
