Hi Guys,
I'm a little late on the uptake, but having moved from a pair of
fully-loaded and fully-modified TS 850's to a pair of MK5FT1Kmp's, I can say
there is no comparison.
The TS 850 is an excellent rig, and is unquestionably a classic. However,
here in the caribbean with relatively big antennas and very strong signals
in contest conditions, the Yaesu wins absolutely hands down.
I say all that and then concede it took me a loooong time to make the
decision. However, once I'd gotten the first MK5, the second followed a few
months later without much delay.
During that time, I would listen to both rigs either switching A/B or
sometimes listening on similar antennas on the same frequency. The MK5
FT1Kmp won every time.
Now that I've done most of the mods, including replacing the sub-RX filter
with a 2.1KHz INRAD, this rig is so far ahead of the TS850, it's impossible
to truly compare them.
If you make the switch, you'll no doubt agree with me, if you don't then
like me you'll continue to swear that it can't get much better than the
'850.
IT CAN!!!
Regards,
Dean - 8P6SH / 8P2K
