[1000mp] Questions about Mark V

It's about the difference between a preselector and a preamplifier, i.e.
bandwidth. If you do not have very strong out-of-band signals that could
cause front-end overload, it seems to me that it does not matter much. But
on 160, for example, strong B/C stations may be present, not all that far,
percentage-wise from where you are listening. (I was also astounded to
discover that several commercial coastal stations below the BC band were
absolutely HUGE here.) Another factor is whether one needs the gain
differential on a band like 160, which is not noise-floor limited.

For weak signal topband DXing from my QTH, which is ringed by canyon walls,
I tend to use FLAT. During 160 contests, which for me have largely been
domestic contests, I am frequently better off using TUNED or IPO.

On 10 and 12m, it is another story. There the preamp gain in TUNED exceeds
FLAT and is essential, at least for me.

True, but what I still am wondering is if FLAT is a broadband preamp that
gives me more gain (so the manual says), then why ever use it in TUNED mode?
It seems to me that in TUNED mode because you loose some of your gain that
this would hinder hearing weaker stations. Although I will admit the amount
that you hear them between the two choices may not be that noticable, there
is still a loss of gain between TUNED and FLAT. (By the way, I set mine to
TUNED when I got the radio years ago, since I have read the manual again and
came to the above understanding I am wondering, why did I do that and
looking for some justification in it before I switch it to FLAT.)
