William, nothing wrong with being old, in fact I have a B-day tomorrow. In
fact, I'm celebrating my b-day with a holiday on Monday.<grin> The fix to
stop having birthdays and getting older is a bit drastic to me and real
permanent.

Hi Guys,
Yes, I am serious, I have never done a mod unless recommended, approved in
writing by the Mfg. and the necessary parts as a kit from the Mfg.
This goes back to my old "Collins" days and don't touch it without Art's
blessing..
There are some things that are not the best on the Mark V, the Field,
FT1000D, IC781, TS870DSP in short, each has it's own set of shortcomings but
is a million miles ahead of a Collins A or S Line.
I personally do not care for DSP on rigs today, just too darn hard to tune
for me and do not sound right so I only use it if I have no choice.
All in all, I have found the TS870DSP the best to my taste. I have owned
several Icom Pro and POR II's and never did get the DSP to work to my
liking.
I have had friends in the radio room show me how it's done and I still did
not like it.. I guess it is just personal preference.
I am just glad that I have the quantity of rigs to use whatever one is best
for what I am doing at the time. As to the digital modes, don't laugh but I
prefer the TS 570 G best of all.
As to overall ease of use and my personal favorite is the FT1000D hands
down. The reason it is not on the lineup on the main desk is the fact that
it will not allow all the functions with the Quadra Amplifier as the Mark V
will do such as " flip on and go" with one switch.
OK, OK, I admit that a lot of my preference is based on my age, eyesight,
feel of a "real radio" etc. but the larger radios Mark V, FT1000D, IC781 are
much easer for an old "fossil" like me to use.

Hi William,
Are you serious? You have not done any of the mods to your Mark V?
I would say that your philosophy on keeping your rig to the specs the
designers intended is a reasonable one if Yaesu met their responsibility
in correcting flaws in their design as they are discovered. And it
would be nice and should be expected that Yaesu would modify and correct
errors in their design during the life of production runs for that model
radio. But they don't. They seem to make no changes, improvements or
corrections over the decade that they produce a rig. Can any of you
guess where I'm heading with this? One of my pet peeves with the Mark V
is key clicks. Don't you think it's rather irresponsible of Yaesu not
to correct this problem in all of the years the Mark V has been out?
Don't you think it's irresponsible for all the Mark V owners who don't
do the click mod in there rigs?
I hear unmodified Mark Vs on the air all of the time, especially during
contests. I've done the receiver mods (including the roofing filter
mod) to my Mark V and that has greatly reduced the bandwidth I can hear
these key clicks but I still hear them.
