The FT1000MP is a an usual superheterodyne receiver that need intermediate 
if filters for good work.
For better understanding you must study on amateur radio books what is a 
superherodyne receiver, if stages  and agc.
Anyway I will try to explain  to you how is ft1000mp.
Ft1000MP has, from antenna input to loodspeaker these stages at intermediate 
radio frequency:
-70Mhz, with filter wide 15khz for passing all modes (nbfm, am, ssb, 
digital, cw) (add wonderful Inrad 4khz wide!)
-8,2 mhz with some filter selections, at least 2,7khz ssb, plus optional 
2,1khz, 500hz, 250hz
-455khz with optional filters.
If you dont have a cw filter at least at 8,2mhz if stage you have the 
automatic gain control (agc) working driven from all the signals in the 
2,7khz window (a signal can be attenuated by the agc driven from a stronger 
adjacent signal).
Also you have an higher level of intemodulations in the receiver becouse you 
are amplifying all signals in the 2,700hz 8,2mhz windows.
So it is really necessary for cw reception to use at least 500hz filter at 
8,2mhz and if possible 250hz filter.
Even better is to use, bought from Inrad, the pair 400hz/8,2mhz plus 
400hz/455khz - a real wonderful pair for dxing and contesting.
EDSP filtering is good only for helping to receive signals in the noise -but 
a lot of cw operators dont like it (even me).
