The MkV monitor appears to be susceptible to RF getting into it via any 
leads plugged into the front panel.  Try some ferrite chokes on your 
leads.  In my experience the monitor output is not in any way indicative 
of how the signal sounds on the air.

Haven't tried AM but see no reason why it would be any different in this 
regard.
