[1000mp] Dead Band sound?

Good morning!
I've got a really dumb question: What should a dead band sound like?
I've got a fairly new MkV - xmas purchase. Two weeks ago I installed a full
set of INRAD's including the roofing filter. I haven't had the radio long
enough to remember how things sounded before installing the filters.
On a 'quiet' band I hear what sounds like a louder version of the sound you
get from a seashell - not a hiss but a steady 'whoosh'. It's steady, not
pulsing, and it is quieter on the high bands (10, 12, 15) than 40 or 80. The
narrower the filter, the lower the pitch.
Just to be sure, I opened the case and took the roofing filter out of the
loop with the same result. A little quieter because the gain is down (I
adjusted RF gain from 14 to 12 after installing the roofing filter). I
confirmed that the board was getting the 5V that it needs. So I think that's
ok.
The lower I set the RF gain the quieter it is, but then I'm it would be
going deaf at that point.
The one thing I haven't done yet is pull out my FT990 and listen - I feel
like I'm losing my mind and asking a really dumb question, but does this
sound like a normal sound? Signals are bright and clear - it's just on the
empty space that it seems louder than it should.
What do you think?
