The attenuators are accurate in terms of db reduction (6/12/18db in a 50
ohm system). At least mine were when I measured against a known good
external attenuator a few years ago.
Currently my 6db pad series resistor is open so only the 12db setting
functions, this is to be fixed after I finish eye exercises and
polishing of my magnifying glasses.
The S-Meter, particularly with readings S9 and below, is very arbitrary.
Previous measurements posted on this list and other sites indicate that
the S-Meter tends to be more accurate (or at least meaningful when it
registers a db!) between S9 and S9+40.
