Vince:

No need to defend: my IC-781 PA board smoked 11 components and had to almost completely re-built. These are not robust radios....As far as parts are concerned Icom has all of them, but a few are near extinction (MRF422). It won't be long before they're unable to repair the 781.

No, my antennas present at worse a 2.5 to 1 mismatch, and I seldomly use
more than 100 watts RF output power. Over the years, I have not ever
used AM, but I am long winded on RTTY.

Honestly, if I knew the reason why, I would stop doing whatever it is
that I do to cause problems. My fanned dipoles for 40m/30m/20m are used
on the fundamental bands and also on 17m/15m/12m/10m sometimes. I use
RTTY most of the time, otherwise Morse CW. Usually do not push more
than an indicated 100 watts of output power. The VSWR on 20m is better
than 2.5:1.

Other than PA transistors on two occasions, a capacitor failed within
the 40m and within the 12m section of the LPF, on two separate
occasions, causing loss of RF output on those bands.

On each of the bands that I have operated, the Auto Ant Tuner is enabled
and have been able to load to full or close to full (200w) output.. I do
not really need the Ant Tuner on 40m or 30m. I thought that there was
an over VSWR protection circuit to help out when using non resonant
aerials. .
