The problem manufacturers face is obtaining parts from suppliers. This
may account for the fact that Yaesu (Vertex-Standard) is discontinuing
the Mark Vs, and means that it's necessary to stockpile critical stuff
like the DSP chips, which become obsolete rapidly. Once the stockpile is
gone, that's it.

I think we will not see again situations where an FT-1000D, for example,
can be factory serviced 15 years after its introduction. Ten-Tec says it
has an ample stockpile of parts for the Orion (now discontinued). But
the production cycle of radios is going to be much shorter, it seems,
due if nothing else to rapid chip obsolescence.

The good news is that most rigs sold nowadays have a very long life span
and do not require factory service/upgrades. If you can live without the
latest and greatest, then most rigs are good to go, even if they're not
in production any longer.
