Hi Bill,
A TNC is a Terminal Node Controller - a "smart" radio modem which converts
DC signals into FSK or PSK tones. A TNC is required for RTTY, AMTOR, SITOR,
PACTOR, packet etc. Nowadays, there are programs which run on a PC and
emulate a TNC. The computer's soundcard generates and demodulates the VF
(voice-frequency) tones. This has rendered commercial TNC's such as the
Kamtronics line somewhat obsolete.
I must confess to almost complete ignorance on the subject of digital modes,
as I only operate SSB and (rarely) CW. I would suggest that you ask around
on the Yaesu and Icom reflectors - many of the guys there are heavily
involved in the digital modes, and will be glad to help you.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Hi Adam,
IN reading thru some of the rig manuals, they keep talking about a TNC is
all that is needed for some of the digital modes.
So,,,,,, what is a TNC, what does it do, and where can one be found?
Thanks and 73
