William 1856??? You don't have to use a tnc depending on what
you want to do. Just do a search for psk31 for instance or RTTY.
Many homebrew interfaces out there.

Hi folks,

After being licensed since 1856, I thought I might like to try some of the
digital modes.  I have a few Yaesu rigs, a couple being FT1000MP MK V's.
The manual says I need a TNC.  Could someone please point me in the right
direction as to what I need?
