One contest weekend is not the last word on a subject, but I also found that
I was not using the DSP very much during CQP with my MP. I installed the
roofing filter last week.

Subject: Re: [1000mp] New Roofing Filter
We had a discussion about this after the first filters shipped from Dayton,
which is when I received mine. However, now that there are many more in
circulation, it is probably more relevant to many on the list. First, the
filter has an on-board amp that more than makes up for its insertion loss.
With the front-end mod, my IF gain setting was two steps lower than factory.
When I exchanged that mod with the roofing filter, I only moved it back up
one step, so it still requires lower gain than without any mods, i.e., the
factory setting. I think it is worth it, but cost v. benefit is such a
relative thing. The radio sounds so much clearner now. I almost never use
the dsp (on-board or out-board NIR-12), instead, when there is a loud signal
nearby, I use the NAR1 and the shift control, and if insufficient, I use the
manual notch (I found that the NIR-12 is much better at dsp filtering, so I
use the manual notch with the NIR-12 if necessary). Tom W6EIJ
