On the Mark V when operating PSK you obiviously need the PKT button pressed.
But if you are using multimode software that can do PSK, CW and RTTY what
should you do there? Keep the radio in PKT or switch it to CW or RTTY to
match the mode?
I have been playing with HamScope simply because it is multimode. I've
noticed that in all the different programs that the PSK works pretty much
the same way. So I figured that I would get a multimode program and learn
PSK there and then if/when I want to go to another mode I wouldn't have to
learn new software.
Also since I am going from Line Out (on the sound card) to Data In on the
Packet plug and Data Out to Line In. That these connections are direct. I
am using a simple circuit to do the PTT and this works. It was suggested
that I get one of the interfaces to ge between the computer and rig. Any
suggestions there what works best with the Yaesu?
Thanks and 73s
Bob

I know I have posted this on the reflector before, but here it goes again.
You do not need an interface with the FT-1000MP (plain vanilla). I have had
mine hooked up to a soundcard for several years without any problems
whatsoever. Simply hook up the AF OUT on the MP to the LINE IN on the
soundcard and hook up the SPEAKER on the soundcard to the PATCH on the MP.
Yaesu has provided a simple solution to run packet in USB in the old MP
using the USER function:
Here it is:
Configuring the FT-1000MP for USB-side Operation in the Packet Mode
for
MARS Operation
Although the FT-1000MP's Mode selection does not allow the use of USB-side
injection during "PKT" (Packet) operation, it is possible, through Menu
programming of the parameters of the "User" key, to configure the FT-1000MP
for USB-side injection in the Packet operating mode for MARS use.
Procedure
1. Enter the "Menu" mode by pushing and holding in the [FAST] key and then
pushing the [ENT] key on the keypad momentarily.
2. Rotate the [MEM/VFO CH] knob to select Menu Item 8-6.
3. Now set up the parameters in each category shown below. These parameters
will shift the various oscillators, while in the "PKT/LSB" mode, so as to
place them at the frequencies they would be in if there were a dedicated
"PKT/USB" mode. In effect, you are creating such a mode by using the "USER"
key setup capability.
Mode Disp. Offset RX-PLL RX-CAR TX-PLL TX-CAR*
PKT LO +2.125 kHz +2.210 kHz 452.790 kHz +2.210 kHz 452.790 kHz
* Prior to Production Lot #05, the value for "TX CAR" could not be set below
456.300 kHz. For these earlier versions, the use of 456.300 kHz should still
produce entirely satisfactory results.
4. Push the [ENT] key momentarily to save your new settings and exit to
normal operation. The "User" mode is now configured for pseudo-USB operation
in the AFSK (Packet) operating mode.

That is how I have always used my FT-1000MP. I use it for many digital
modes without any problems. If I leave the computer hooked up to the rig
while using the monitor function I do get a hum through the monitor, and I
have been told that when I forget to disconnect the computer from the rig I
do get some hum on my SSB signal. So always disconnect the rig if you are
not using the computer for digital modes.

Or better yet, use a 1:1 isolation transformer from Radio shack in the
line-out line, and the hum will probably go away.

This is not good advice. A typical soundcard puts out a signal that
is 60 dB too hot (volts) for the mic or patch input of The FT1000MP
(millivolts). Lowering the output level of the soundcard *might* work (if
you are lucky) or might degrade the signal but not the noise (if you are
unlucky).
Lowering the MIC gain control is not the answer, as there are two
stages of audio gain in the MP before the MIC gain control. If you overdrive
those two stages, you will put out 3 KHZ of wideband trash or incredible
amounts of intermod products (I've seen way too much of that on the air).
If you use it for speech audio, you will hear LOTS and LOTS of HUM.
Simple solution is to attenuate the signal, Radio Shack sells a 60
dB. attenuating audio cable for about $3, no soldering required. An
isolating transformer helps clean up the HUM especially if you have the
speech processor turned on.
