Not likely anytime soon. Until we have economical ADC/DAC's with
24-bit resolution and sampling rates >10 MHz, we will continue to have
hybrids. If the JA manufacturers continue with their general coverage
architectures, sample rates would need to be >100 MHz (twice first IF).
Meanwhile the Elecraft K2 will continue to outperform most of these
"astonishing" DSP radios in basic performance measurements like IMD and BDR.
The DSP chips of today were born of the cellphone industry with huge
volumes driving down the cost. I'm not sure exactly what will drive faster
ADC/DAC's in similar volumes, but it will probably be some sort of video
application...HDTV, digital minicams, etc. Until we have such a driver
for economical ADC/DAC's in the 10 MHz 24-bit range, dreams of "pure" DSP
radios will remain just that, and even chips in this range would require
a down-converted First IF (like Orion or the K2) to work at 5 MHz.
