Yes it's normal. I have a two month old Mark V Field and it does the same thing. You will also find times when the display will not come on for 2-5 seconds or until you hear the relay click. In some cases the display is failing period right out of the box. 

I love the performance of the rig on the digital modes due to the DSP and other bells and whistles but to me the design issue with the display is pathetic. I also understand that the problem also occurs with the original MP. I also discovered that the meter display for VCC/MIC on my rig does not work. 

It's still a super rig bugs and all for $1700 BUT I've also been an FT-840 owner since 1993 and find that the receiver on the Mark V Field when run with all bells and whistles off is no better then the FT-840. As a matter of fact with the noise blanker "on" the Mark V Field has IMD on 160 meters and my FT-840 doesn't. I have a 50 KW station on 1010 kc 5.5 miles away, a 10 KW station on 760 kc 8 miles away and a 5 KW station 3 miles away, the sources of the 160 IMD. The FT-840 now costs less then $600 and it's receiver is EXCELLENT.

  Hi all I was wondering if anybody else has come across this problem?

  On my MKV at power on, the display is very dim and then slowly brightens up over the next half hour.
  I have the menu item set to bright.

  Is this normal or is something wrong with the display unit.
