monitor or sidetone.

I can sympathize with your warranty concern.  However, Yaesu USA has been 
pretty good about warranty repairs on radios that have mods, so long as the 
mod is not implicated in the problem.  For example, my radio as back for 
warranty repair with the INRAD IF mod installed, and no issue was raised -- 
the technician even touched up my soldering!

You might want to cruise the list archive -- I think you'll find several 
references to independent repair people who will do the mods for you, if 
that's what you would prefer.
