[1000mp] Mark V and VL-1000

Greetings,

I have a Mark V and VL-1000. Most of the time, I don't use the VL-1000, so I would like to keep it powered down when I use the Mark V barefoot.  Problem is, I've connected the power supplies, transceiver and amplifier as recommended in the manual.   While this provides a nice "one switch" on/off feature, it doesn't allow me to run the Mark V with the amplifier powered down.  I must be missing something here, or is the expectation that the amplifier should remain powered up whenever I'm using the Mark V?   Any help would be appreciated.
