Try turning down the side tone volume...
I found that it works much better when the two tones are around the
same ampitude.
I can spot pretty well with the spot button.
Side note: I found that I prefer a lower cw tone over a higher one When
I was younger I liked about 1000 hz (I think the hw-101 was 1000 hz),
now I prefer more around 550-650 hz.
