"What are your thoughts about the effects of receiver bandwidth and IF
filter shape, et al upon the user's perception of clicks from another
station? I realize that this introduces another variable into the
situation: the other op's receiver and his use of it. But, even when
ARRL Labs uses an r-f spectrum analyzer, the spectral plot they get is a
function of the receiver function of the SA and its settings."

If you're using a spectrum analyzer, you must use a wide filter in the
receiver to see a wide spectrum. A clean CW signal should only occupy
less than 0.5 kHz of BW at the, say, -60 dB points (or greater!).
If you're listening for key clicks, set the receiver to a narrow CW
filter. For a clean CW signal, you should not hear any clicks outside of
the receiver's passband.
