Way to go, Bob - nothing stalls the Heathkit Generation for very long!
Just could be you might need to downsize a few tools... but we already
did that once, when we moved from tubes to transistors. We can do it
again for surface-mount.
The two absolute essentials are a good soldering iron and a good
magnifier. I use an ordinary Weller TCP with a fine pointy tip, and an
extra pair of strong drugstore eyeglasses ahead of my normal reading
glasses. It's not exactly the perfect SMD workstation (warning - risks
of neck-ache and nose burns) but it'll get you through short SMD jobs
like this W8JI mod.
