I have to agree with Bill, WR0T in his rating of the top receivers. I've
done a similar test on a number of transceivers.
My A/B tests were for determining which receiver was best able to dig
weak CW signals out of the mud on both 160m and 10m without regard to BDR
or IMD3. This is how I rated them:
1) Elecraft K2 with KDSP2
2) Icom IC-756Pro2 and IC-746Pro (tied)
3) Yaesu FT-1000MP with INRAD front-end mod
4) Kenwood TS-870S and Kenwood TS-830S
5) Yaesu FT-1000
6) Kenwood TS-850SDX
7) Icom IC-775DSP
8) Icom IC-746
9) Ten-Tec Omni VI+
10) Ten-Tec Orion
The top five spots were very close in my A/B tests, and any of those
radios is excellent.
During the recent Stew Perry 160m contest I used the IC-756Pro2 on a
full-size 1/4 vertical. There was no problem with strong adjacent
signals "pumping" the AGC and no BDR problems. IMD3 problems were
noticeable in the crowded band with many strong signals until I set the
input attenuator at 12 dB, then the receiver was clean (preamps off).
During the same type of contest conditions my FT-1000MP requires 6 dB of
input attenuation to clean up the receiver (with the IPO on, i.e.,
preamps bypassed)..
