The DSP in the Yaesu is easily outdone by outboard units. On 17 meters, I
get a transitory S9 level noise that will just come up out of the blue, and
stay for awhile, also, I have a slight hearing loss. Even when a signal is a
few S-units above the noise level, I have a hard time understanding the
other person. A local ham friend using the Clear Speech, and reports good
results.
I had been using a Timewave 599zx for over a year, but it did not do much
for background noise on SSB. I recently got a JPS NIR-12. It is perhaps
that first piece of gear I've bought that truly exceeded my expectations -
it really gets rid of all the background noise, but with a cell phone sound
quality. Then, using the shift and width controls, I'm able to restore much
of the sound quality.
These are no longer made, but apparently they do come up on the used market.
I got mine from QRZ, for $ 150.00. I've done searches on Google and I'm
surprised, for how well it works, that there wasn't more said about it. It
can also be used on transmit, and one can download and rework the software,
using the port inside the case. After about two weeks of using it, I've
been truly amazed - it completely beats my 599zx on SSB. Tom W6EIJ
