Keith,

I have had my 'MP (new) since 9/01. I have found the 'Contour' control to
be very effective. However, the "NR" selections seem to reduce the band
noise and the signal I'm interested in, pretty much the same. In other
words, I have rarely if ever seen them make the difference between copy and
no copy. For more enjoyable copy under strong signal conditions, I just
throw in the attenuator and/or reduce RF gain.

I believe that the DSP in the 'MP is 16 bit/33 MHz, rather old. The DSP/NR
in my TS 870 (24 bit/40 MHz) only occasionally makes a positive difference.
The DSP/NR in my TS2000 (24 bit/100 MHz in the IF plus additional in the
audio chain) is more likely to help things out but is not terribly
effective. The above is clearly offered from a hardware perspective.
Different models/companies can use different NR algorithms so compute
horsepower is not the only factor. I have not talked to anyone who has
been very impressed with DSP/NR.

For whatever its worth.
