evening Scott. I have a little over a month on my warranty & I have talked
to Yaesu in CA and they will not tell me any thing regarding my unit. I also
spoke to a tech regarding any updates and the only one that was noted was
the display.
customer service tells me "even IF they new any thing they could not tell
me".
the tech I spoke with says that customer serv does not have info regarding
the S#'s. and that service also does not get regular up dates on rigs, they
must find them on there own as unites are serviced.
The retailer I bought from has an impeccable reputation, and has No service
center. they say it was new. I believe them.
about a year and a half ago I was swindled for a FT 990 purchased off of
eBay, I don't have the extender boards nor did I want to spend $250.00 -
$300.00 for a set, so it went to yaesu service, was returned twice with the
same problem's, on the last return to me it still had 1 of the orig
problems(ALC meter) it was sent in for, they stated it was fine and I must
have a resistance in my antenna causing my issue. it functioned correctly on
an external load & watt meter. it would function correctly on my antenna
only IF I used the ATU. I sold it, the new owner was aware of the issue &
related to me after he received it that it was present with his station
also.
after this I did purchase my field, HOWEVER if it requires service, I will
NOT send it to Yaesu. if I cannot service it my self then it will go to some
one I feel is confident to do the service like Burghardt's.
I don't know what has happened to Yaesu factory service & customer support/
relations. sad.

Rich,
I'd guess any updates would be done in Japan, not the U.S.

You obviously have some uncertainty as to whether your rig is new or a
repack, so why not ask the place you bought it or check the serial number
with Yaesu. By the way, to my knowledge, Yaesu does not sell "repacks" per
se- they call them refurbs and this should be indicated by your serial
number. If your dealer sold you a refurb as a new rig, it would be easy to
find out and Yaesu would not be happy. I would certainly ask about the
presence of thermal grease on my rig.
