I bought the whole group of mods from Inrad for the Mark V (which is
everything except an AGC mod) - included in, I think, the frond-end mod, was
a bonus mod (the K9AN main receiver AF filter mod). It seems this mod only
works when the DSP is not engaged (through the menu). My question - does
anyone turn off the DSP, and if so, why - or under what conditions would
someone do so?
So far, I've installed the front-end mod, and it works fine. The next step
is to install the key-click mod, and the noise blanker mod. But I'm not
sure about the K9AN mod. Why not just do it? I'm a little uncomfortable
soldering on these little boards - I feel quite competent on my 75A-4, but
here - a little concerned, so as little mess'in around as possible. The
front-end mod was quite easy, but it involved putting wire into already
prepared holes - this is quite different. I'd hate to screw something up,
especially for a mod that I might not even use.
>From what I've read and seen, the NB mod is a bit scary - could really
scorch the circuit board or damage a trace with too much heat. I do have a
nice modern soldering station, and small solder, AND, the benefits of that
mod seem significant. Thanks to everyone who has posted pictures and
step-by-step instructions - after reviewing them, I feel like I know in
advance what I'll see.
So anyway, is anyone using their Yaesu with the DSP off, where the reduced
hiss from the K9AN mod is significant? Tom W6EIJ
