Experience always counts a lot and I Can appreciate your answer but you worked them because of an adequate antenna along with right time and place. I worked the VU4 on 11 Dec with a lot of others calling but Hell I was using a 6 el yagi sp and running 1500 watts. My odds were better than the guy running the same watts and a lousy antenna or 100 watts and good antenna. My buddy was using 1500 watts and the same brand 6 element antenna and did not work them that day but managed to work them on cw. So go figure that out.

ON THE OTHER HAND
What I was saying in my answer to the original post was that having owned both the 1000mp and the Mark V the 1000mp seems to work better and you can tell a difference when you select the dsp or filtering. Again a lot depends on the operator and the menu settings.

I am also saying that the old Drake receiver that came up with a better filtering solution is still great and works -- Folks now adays think they can add or tweak something alah a weak signal jumps to s-9. Doesn't add up that way -- $10k for a radio and a lousy or mediocre antenna system with crappy operations doesn't add to very much.

That was my thoughts - NOW if someone would care to contact me off thread and share some light on their menu selections I'd appreciate it.

Well as a HF intercept operator for the USAF and over 45yrs a ham I have used
many hight performance receivers. I can say that The Yaesu FT1000 series of
radios is the finest ham transceiver to date (not sure of the very latest
$10,000 radios). But the proof is in the pudding - I worked VU4!!!
