tell us the bare minimum you need in other filters. Also does this work
better with CW versus SSB???
Of couse, what you need is dependent upon your operating needs. But the
short answer, in my opinion, would be to just install the First IF filter -
on SSB, you get two quite usable filter schemes - 4.0 and 2.4. On CW, you
get 2.4 (with the narrow 2.0 filters, you do get 2.0 in the "NOR" CW
position) and 500 hz. This is the bare minimum. There has been many
excellent and informative posts written on this listserv about filter
choices, and I would read the posts on filter choices, and decide what
additional filters you need. Here is what I do:
I do mostly rag chewing, which means that I need to be able to maintain a
contact for much longer than the wham-bang-thank-you-ma'm-contestors. Loud
stations close-by, tuner-uppers, changing conditions in the course of a 40
minute [or even longer] QSO, breaks and requests for signal reports from all
over the globe, and an exchange that is not mostly standardized, means that
I need good directional antenna (SteppIR in my case) and the best QRM
fighting equipment I can afford. ;) So in addition to the Mark V
on-board equipment, I have a second receiver (modified R-4C), an NIR-12 and
a Timewave 599 zx. In comparision to these older outboard DSP units, I find
the Mark V DSP almost, but not quite, useless; but I digress.
When I got the First IF filter, (as I said in another post, I'm keeping the
other mod -see www.qsl.net/ic8pof/howto/roofing%20filter/switchable.htm) I
was amazed at how well the "NOR" position worked on SSB - I have not used
the "NAR2" position since. I now almost always use the "NOR" position on
SSB, and with some QRM, I'll use the "NAR1," but I rarely need to use
outboard DSP or the IDBT. The result is a much more pleasing audio. So I
wouldn't rush to fill the "NAR2" slot.
On CW, I use the "NOR" position most of the time, but I will use the "NOR1"
position, which for me adds an INRAD 400 hz to the stock 500 hz filter. It
seems that this combination, coupled with the Timewave is quite good - I'm
not planning on investing in 250 hz filters. However, going from 2.0 to
500/400 is a significant step, I might do better with an intermediate step,
like 1.0 Khz. Tom W6EIJ
