"transceivers modified are great but no adequate antenna makes for no hearing"

Very, very true. I get a chuckle out of the guys spending
$10,000 for an IC-7800 and using a trap vertical or inverted vee.
I would always take an old FT-101 and stacked yagis on a rotating
tower over an IC-7800 and trap vertical, but it's very surprising
how many guys do not comprehend your statement.

 >what I have read it seems like you also need the optional filters
installed in the rig to get the benefit. Can someone clear up this
point or tell us the bare minimum you need in other filters. Also
does this work better with CW versus SSB???

The MP has 4 IF stages and comes with some form of filtering
at each stage (roofing filters for the 1st, plug-in filters for the
2nd and 3rd, and DSP for the 4th). In general, you want your best
filtering at the most forward points in the IF chain, so I would
opt for the roofing filter first, but that is because I mainly do
contests and low-band DX'ing where IMD can be a real problem. You
can probably easily get by in normal use without any optional SSB
filters, but you might want at least one of the 500 Hz filters. I
would probably opt for the 2nd IF over the 3rd if I had to choose,
but of course both is better. This is a very short answer but I
don't have time for more. Regarding CW versus SSB, IMD affects
both but is probably more obvious in CW. As I said before, IMD in
SSB just sounds like more noise or splatter instead of the phantom
tones you can plainly hear in CW.
