Hi John,
I haven't experience the roofing filter mod, but I have one on order. I
hope to get it on this months run (they are producing 200 a month). I don't
think there is something lacking in the Mark for the money, but like any rig
can be improved upon. With the roofing filter installed it ranks very good
in close in filtering. See: http://www.sherweng.com/table.html
The general coverage rigs are at a somewhat disadvantage here. I think the
only general coverage rig better than the Mark V Inraded up is the Icom
7800. For the money it should be better.
To make the Mark V perform read the manual, add some filtering to the mode
you operate, play, read some more and have fun. I am some what slow and it
took me around 6 months to get up to speed on my Mark V. I never did read
the manual and try every control in one sitting. When I finally quit
scanning the manual I found the Mark V a very good rig! I have installed
the Key Click mod, NB mod, and use the Key in/Key for a Alpha 99 via the
band data jack utilizing the transmit inhibit feature. I never could get
the Band Watch to work well for me on the Pro II this Mark V replaced ( For
DXing I love being able to spit audio in each headphone ear cup), so even if
I upgrade the Mark V is a keeper if for nothing else to DX with, hi.
Bottom line I can't wait to get the roofing filter installed.
Happy Holidays and 73 de jay/w5jay..
