Try this old trick...add 5 feet of coax...or maybe 10...sometimes a tuner can be finicky.

Subject: [1000mp] Hi SWR on new MkV

Greetings all!

Sorry if this has been covered before - it is not obvious to me how to
search the archives short of scrolling thru each month in turn. Is there an
easier way?

I received my 'early xmas present' this past thursday - a new MkV!
Completely stock as of now. It replaces an FT990 I've had for ten years.

My problem seems to be an initial Hi SWR on 10 and 12 meters. When I first
key up it pegs the SWR meter, 'Hi SWR' lights up, and then SWR creeps down
to where it should be in 20-30 seconds. It happens when the coax is
connected to both A or B antenna ports. It only happens on 10 and 12 meters,
CW and phone. I reconnected my FT990 and it has no problems with these
bands.

I have two antennas for ten and it happens on both. I ran some tests to see
if I could isolate the problem. With menu 8-8 (tuner) turned OFF, I
systematically unplugged everything I could from the radio so that in the
end, only a straight key was connected to the front key jack. No mic,
speaker, etc. Computer, monitor, all other power sources and devices are
off. I don't own an amp. I also checked the SWR using my RF Analyzer thru
the same coax the radio sees and got expected results.

Turning menu 8-8 back on results in the same behavior. Pressing the 'tuner'
button so 'Tuner' is lit seems to solve the problem.

I guess I can run with the tuner on all the time, but is this the right
behavior? I've only had to use the tuner on the 990 when I used my 40m or
80m antennas. The 12m WARC beam is flat as a pancake. I also have an FT100
and it had to go back for an 'SWR fix' a while back where it would complain
of Hi SWR on high bands - is this a similar problem?

Thanks, and 73!
