[1000mp] Separate PTT for VFO-A/B

I am new to this list and do not own an -MP yet but I have had a 990 for
many years and have done quite a bit of programming with it. What if you had
a keystroke you could use to toggle this feature? It is essentially the same
as enabling/disabling SPLIT - when you want to xmit on -B, turn on SPLIT.
Turn it off and you're on A. Would that do it?
As for how to get there, you could write a simple program that communicated
with the radio via the serial port, but your logging program is probably
already doing that and may have exclusive access to the port. A
potentially-overkill solution could be a simple microcontroller device (like
a Basic STAMP) that sat between the PC and the radio normally passing all
the serial traffic on. It could monitor a footswitch line sending the SPLIT
ON/OFF serial commands as the signal changed.
Is there some application with SO2R features that might help here?
Just thinking out loud...

Subject: [1000mp] Separate PTT for VFO-A/B
Hi,
I have a Mark-V Field I use for contesting. Is there any way to have
separate PTT's for each VFO? I prefer to operate with a footswitch PTT to
keep my hands on the PC's keyboard. It would be nice to have a separate
footswitch for each VFO - so I could CQ on one VFO & search for Q's on the
other. I think separate footswitches would be quicker and there would be
less chance of transmitting on the wrong VFO than swapping VFO's twice for
each S & P QSO.
(Even better if the arrangement would also work on CW - Normally transmit on
VFO A, but transmit on B only while one footswitch is pressed)
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chris VA3NR.
