John,
Here's what I did ...
I moved the stock Collins 500 Hz filter to the sub rcvr.
I added both 500 Hz and both 250 Hz to the main rcvr.
I did this in 1995, so Yaesu filters were the only option
at the time, if I was doing this today, I'd use INRAD.
For the investment ... the 2x 500 Hz will give you the best
return ... then 1x 250 Hz <I would do the 8.2 MHz IF first>
and then the second 250 Hz at 455 kHz.
I also added both 2.0 kHz filters and that's what I use most
of the time on CW ... then kick in the 500 Hz as needed.
The 250 Hz are great to have, say 40m in a contest,
but the 2x 500 Hz and careful use of the other controls
works very well 95 % of the time for me and the other
guest ops.
The reason for using 2x 500 is that the "skirts" become
much tighter ... in other words the signals off the sides
are attenuated even more, but the "window" <the 500 Hz>
stays the same "width" ... the narrower filtering you use,
the higher the losses may be due to insertion loss, and
the smaller "window" <say 250 Hz> may mean that you
miss stations not directly in your bandwidth.
Hope this proves useful!
