Without reading the subject line in my previous email it wasn't clear that the info pertained specifically to the MkV, including the noise blanker mod which improves close in BDR and IMD by about 10dB according to Tom's testing. As explained on Tom's page, turning down the NB to minimum and turning it off doesn't do it. The mod simply biases off the first transistor in the noise blanker the same way the second one is biased off when the NB is turned off.

There are a number of tools specifically designed to rework SMT boards. One of the usual tools is a soldering iron that looks like tweezers. You heat both sides of a component and just pick it off. I don't have one. What I did is take a chisel soldering iron tip about 1/8" wide, put a little solder on it and then touch it against the long side of the resistor so it heated the whole thing including both ends. I pushed gently and four or five seconds later it came off cleanly with no problem.
I already have the INRAD clix mod and was going to upgrade to W8JI mod as it only requires two more components than the INRAD mod. But, after listening to my MkV with the INRAD mod on a very narrow receiver and not being able to hear clix +/- 300Hz away, I decided the INRAD mod was good enough.
