As an FT-1000MP owner for almost 5 years, I found that W8JI's assessment
of the MP being one of the clickiest rigs on the air is absolutely
correct.
When W8JI first alerted those on this reflector that the MP had a
problem, I immediately installed the INRAD "keying improvement mod" for
my MP.
Before the mod, clicks could be heard more than +/- 2 kHz from center.
After the mod, clicks were reduced to +/- 800 Hz.
Not being satisified with a still-too-wide CW signal (IMO), I installed
the additional components required per the W8JI click mod. That reduced
the clicks to +/- 300 Hz. I'm now happy with my MP on CW, knowing that
I'm not spoiling the fun of others who are trying to copy weak CW signals
on the bands within 2+ kHz of my signal.
I seriously doubt that W8JI's criticism was affected with self-imposed
blinders. As an active contester and DXer himself, he is surely well
aware that the MP is one of the most popular rigs used in contests and on
DXpeditions. We should all thank him for bringing the MP's click problem
to our attention and for offering a solution to the problem via his click
mod info.
